The Holidays at the Sharing Center
Because of the South Brevard Sharing Center, many families enjoyed happier holidays than they would have otherwise. In the fall, applicants sign up for assistance. These applications are checked for eligibility and duplication. A few days before Thanksgiving, turkeys, eggs, cranberry sauce, etc. are distributed. A month later, things really get into high gear. Depending on the need, foodstuffs and/or toys are given away.
Last year over 1,034 children had a “Merry Christmas.” Basketballs, dolls, bicycles and helmets, toy trucks, cars, games, books, learning toys, baby clothes and baby items, were given to parents/guardians. All of these were new items, nothing second-hand at this time of year. The South Brevard Sharing Center has given toys and foods to needy families for over 25 years and, with the help of our community, will continue to do so.
Imagine how much is needed for 1,000+ children! What we especially need are gifts for teens such as games, CD players and blank CD’s, books, jewelry, make-up, purses, wallets, footballs, basketballs, soccer balls, skateboards, knee pads, helmets, skim boards, arts and crafts. Gift cards from Target, Walmart, our local movie theaters, and fast food restaurants.
Or it may be easier for you to mail a check to the South Brevard Sharing Center,
noting that the monies be used for toys or food. You may also purchase food gift certificates at grocery stores. You will help the working poor of our community and, if you’ve never done this before, you will be surprised at how great you feel after giving.
Christmas Toy program for needy children ages to 18
Each December the Sharing Center works with the Salvation Army to identify local needy families to receive Christmas dinner food and gifts for their children. Families must meet qualifications for this program. They also can not be registered elsewhere in the county for aid.
The South Brevard Sharing Center will be helping 350 families for the Christmas Holidays. We have had more requests than ever. Each family will receive a complete dinner and children between the ages of 1-18 will receive a new toy or gift (about
1,000 children!). The SBSC will distribute gifts on december 20th and 21st. We always make sure the older children receive gifts as well.
Please keep in mind that this will be the family's only way to provide Christmas to their children. Most of the gift items are under $10. Listed items we need:
