History
The South Brevard Sharing Center, Inc., was founded in 1971 by a group of women to fill a gap in needed services that could not be contracted immediately at the other social service in Brevard County. It was originally located in a small green house on Hickory Street in Melbourne. In 1973, it moved to 1617 Oak Street, Melbourne, Florida where it was located until 2000.
That year, capital campaign enabled the center to acquire its own building at its current location at 17 East Hibiscus Avenue, marking a new era of expanded services. The Sharing Center is a private, non-profit corporation, chartered under the State of Florida, January 31, 1974. It is nondenominational, providing service to those in need of emergency assistance who live south of Memorial Gardens and extending south to the Brevard County line.
In the 80's, public transportation did not exist in Brevard County, so a second Client Center and Thrift Shop was opened in Palm Bay. The Thrift store is located at 1601 Orange Blossom Trail, and the Client Center is located at 2881 N.E. Palm Bay.
